Excerpt from the book
My first glimpse of our new baby was distressing. Her body was limp, her skin blue, and her cry was a low raspy sound. Naturally, I was frightened and concerned. My husband, Brian and the nurse were quick to offer reassurance, but I did press the nurse just the same. She grew curt at this point, repeated the baby was fine. Then without explanation she whisked her off to the Intensive Care Unit. It all happened so abruptly. Rather than being in the arms of her loved ones, my precious newborn was in the cold sterile environment of the ICU.
The doctor showed up the next morning and in a brisk cool manner said: “Your baby has Down Syndrome. Do you want to give her up for adoption?”
